The new Order of the Mass was introduced to the parish in 1970 through bulletin articles and monthly booklets entitled ‘Celebrate.’ The new Rite of Baptism was also introduced. Our Sunday Mass schedule changed to
Saturday at 5:00pm and Sunday at 6:15am, 8:00am, 10:00am, 12:00pm and 6:30pm.
The Teen Club started serving Coffee & Donuts in the parish hall every Sunday following the morning Masses. A used car was purchased for the sisters. This was made possible by the Ushers monthly 50/50 raffle.
A large campaign against “Proposal C” was initiated in the archdiocese and in our parish. This was a proposal against public aid for parochial schools. Parishioners worked tirelessly to save Catholic school.
Fr. Michael Houle, an assistant at SMM for six years was transferred. Fr. Buhl, pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Parish for 26 years, submitted his resignation to officially begin his retirement on June 30, 1971. Fr. Edward Mitchell was
appointed assistant with the right of succeeding Fr. Buhl as pastor.
Fr. Mitchell was installed as pastor on July 2, 1971, and Fr. Buhl, who remained living at the Rectory, became Pastor Emeritus. Fr. Norbert Kendzierski was assigned as our new assistant priest.
After several years without a festival, one was planned for the last weekend of September 1972. It was a huge success and festivals became part of our lives again. A Vegas Night was a joint effort of the Dads Club and Christian
Mothers. They raised enough money to install carpeting in the Sanctuary.
The Dads Club began monthly Pancake Breakfasts in the parish hall in 1972. The proceeds were used to repair and refinish the gym floor. They were able to work on the floor over the school’s Christmas break in 1973 and saved the
parish thousands of dollars by doing the work themselves.
